Middlesex County Bankruptcy Court

Middlesex County is part of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Richmond Division. This federal court at 701 East Broad Street, Suite 4000, Richmond, VA 23219 handles all bankruptcy filings from Middlesex County residents and businesses. The phone number is (804) 916-2400. Bankruptcy is a federal process, so cases do not go through the county circuit court. They go directly into the federal system.

The Eastern District handles all chapter types. Chapter 7 is a liquidation process that can wipe out most unsecured debt in a few months. Chapter 13 lets you keep property and pay back debts over three to five years. Chapter 11 is used by businesses or individuals with large debt loads who want to reorganize rather than liquidate. Every filed case gets a case number and a public docket that records every step of the proceedings.

Middlesex County Bankruptcy Filing Fees

Federal bankruptcy filing fees are set by statute and are uniform across the Eastern District. There is no county-level variation. Chapter 7 costs $338 to file. Chapter 13 costs $313. Chapter 11 costs $1,738. All fees go to the federal court, not the county.
